The GM of the Orlando Magic could not be happier with the way is season is going. Outside of the Raptors the Magic have been one of the most consistent teams in the league. He had a game plan on draft night and stuck to it. He wanted to get the best players available while still maintaining a balance of veterans and younger potential players. Rasheed Wallace and Sam Cassell are the two anchors on this team. Both players are averaging a combined 46 ppg this season. Rasheed Wallace has earned player of the week and player of the month once respectively. It had been a struggle to find a consistent 3rd option however recently Shareef Abdur Rahim has improved his ppg from 12.2 to 16.2 over the last 40 days. Hakeem Olajuwon is a force down low scoring 14ppg nearly 11 rebounds and 2 blocks per game. Cuttino Mobley is quietly averaging 12 ppg and shooting nearly 40% from behind the arc.
The GM made sure he wouldn’t be put into a position of having to draft on pure potential in a few years by drafting a few young guns to develop over the next few years. The most coveted seems to be 23 year old center Loren Woods. He has an A potential rating and already possesses an average inside game and B defensive presence. The other intriguing prospect is 20 year old Antonis Fotsis who is still extremely raw but has B potential and is average across the board. Management hopes that he will learn and study behind Shareef and Cassell.
When asked about how he felt about his team moving forward this year he had this to say “ we are looking at all options to improve our team to win a title this year. We know we can still get better and we have caught a break with the Hawks having to deal with some serious injuries. We believe we have made this team a title contender not only this year but for the next 3-4 years with our current contracts”
***Before the article was published the Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz were working on a deal involving a SG and a future draft pick according to sources***
The Orlando Magic have made their last move to prepare for the final run of the season and be prepared for the playoffs. Orlando has been receiving great contributions from it’s five starters but were lacking a little depth at SG. Orlando was contacted by the Utah Jazz to make a trade involving Orlando’s 2004 2nd round pick for SG Jeff Trepagnier who was buried on the depth chart for the Jazz. He is of the same mold as Bob Sura but is only 24 and has a solid B potential for the rest of his career.
