Sacramento Kings: Young Guns or Young Busts?

The second half of the season is under way and the Kings sitting at 17-24 are looking more inconsistent than when they went to the all star break losing ten in a row in jaw dropping fashion. During the All Star break do it all GM/Owner/Coach Heel/Tiger decided this was the perfect opportunity to test the market, and we have a feeling he liked what he saw and ultimately received.
The Kings started the 2002 season with such promise, the home of what was the self titled “wests’ best backcourt” rushed out to a 17-11 holding down a position in the top 6 in the conference. Mike Bibby was playing well with multiple triple doubles, Stackhouse was Stackhouse scoring between 20 and 30 a game, but it wasn’t enough to save the Kings from the slide, a slide that not many; if any saw coming. Losing 10 in a row to fall to 17-21 was the end of the road for Stackhouse, Bibby and SF Michael Finley.
The Kings instantly relayed to other GM’s that the big 3 were on the table and accepting offers. The Jazz came first with an interest in Finley, and ultimately got him for pennies on the dollar after initial reluctance from Heel/Tiger, the final trade was Michael Finley and Bostons 2003 second round pick for Jonathan Bender and two 2002 selections. Bender is a young 20 year old 6’11” PF with stud potential that has yet to be seen. He saw minimal minutes in Utah, but will now be starting for your local Kings.
The blockbuster of the night though and this years biggest trade to date is the real water cooler conversation starter. For those that somehow happened to miss this deal, heres a quick run down.

We could talk all day about this deal but were just going to speak on the Kings side of this, as you can see they gave up their two best players but in return setting them up nicely for the future. Receiving Joe Forte and Jamal Crawford two young guards as well as a total of three first round picks and a second. Some call it a steal others call it doing what you have to do to ensure you’ll have a chance to replace those two future all stars.
Joe Forte is a 20 year old PG 6’4” PG with superstar potential, and Crawford is an equally talented 6’6” 21 year old PG/SG. Like Bender at their previous locations, Chicago and Phoenix respectively saw very little play time and the chance to progress. Also like Bender they both were instantly thrown into the starting rotation to prove their worth.
When asked why he decided to do this now Heel/Tiger responded confidently saying in a press release ‘This was the right move for our organization, we felt preparing for the future was best. After seeing Joseph play at UNC I knew he would be someone we needed and could rely on for years to come. We are equally as excited about seeing Crawford and Bender in Purple; we feel strongly that they didn’t have the tools around them to progress the way we saw they could. In regards to the draft picks we have our eye on many future prospects that we wish to not disclose at this point for obvious reasons.”
While its yet to be seen what kind of future this organization has, or even if they will come out winners in this trade; you have to be happy to see an organization with a plan in place and the building blocks to be a real power in the association.
During the writing of this article the kings have played 3 games losing all 3 but showed some promise and fight. It seems to be a long road ahead but a drivable one.
