So far this season, the team is a very disappointing 5-8 through the first 15 days. We as an organization thought we would be a top tier team, and expect greatness out of our team. The most disappointing thing is the team’s 4-4 record at home. Our fans buy tickets to see our team win 90% of the time, and this team hasn’t done that. One of the lone bright spots though is Tim Duncan, establishing himself as the early MVP candidate. It’s been a rough patch for us, and we expect to get out of it soon.
Position Review:
Center—Kelvin Cato has been a decent offensive presence inside to complement Duncan so far. His rebounding and defensive skills have impressed us though, and earned him a starting spot on our team to replace the struggling Jamaal Magloire. Magloire, who has been struggling on the offensive end, hasn’t been rebounding nearly as well as Cato. Even though he has more blocks than Cato, we feel as a organization that he still hasn’t matured at the young age of 23 to be the starter just because of 1 aspect of the game. Cato has shown enough on defense to assure us that it would not hurt us either. Primoz Brezec and Shawn Bradley are not on the active roster at this moment.
PF—Tim Duncan has shown to be the centerpiece and elite player that made us pick him with the #2 pick in the creation draft. He is #1 in points per game and #2 in rebounds per game in the league so far. While doing all that he is also the league leader in FT attempts, showing his willingness to get to the line every time he gets to the basket. We as an organization are proud to call Tim Duncan our franchise player and are willing to build the necessary team around him to win a championship if he keeps this up. Jerome Williams has been a solid rebounder and defender when Duncan needs a break if he needs it.
SF—The biggest overall disappointment for this team so far has been our 21 year old rookie Richard Jefferson. We understand that he needs time to adjust to the game in the NBA, but we are severely underwhelmed at his production at this point. Some nights he might it double digits in points, other nights he might hit double digits in rebounds. He is just the king of inconsistency right now. Pat Garrity has been a good 6th man for us so far. His 3 point shooting is what he was brought here to do and he hasn’t disappointed us so far. Devean George was a late free agent pick up that has surprised us so far in limited time. We wouldn’t be surprised if his playing time goes up if Jefferson continues in his slump.
SG—Ray Allen is Ray Allen, 3 point shooting ace. His rebounding and defensive skills seem to have improved a little, and he even helps Mookie out a little with about 5 assists a game. He is getting somewhat 40 minutes a game, which scares us because we don’t want to burn him out too soon, and we thought Bobby Jackson would have been more of a factor. Jackson, who is getting a limited 8 minutes a game, is taking advantage of that time. He is another 3 point shooter, and he shows that with a .500 3 point percentage so far, and an impressive .591 FG percentage. Trenton Hassell was another late free agent pickup that has not seen any action yet this year.
PG—Mookie Blaylock is the biggest surprise for us this year. He was brought in just as a veteran PG to pass the ball to the big 3 and play above average defense. So far he has done that and more. Averaging just over 10 points per game and just over 8 assists a game, he is what we need. What really jumped out at us is his 2 steals a game and just under 6 rebounds a game. He is an all around PG that we all hoped would have happened, just not this soon. Earl Boykins has been a good backup PG so far in limited time. He has a FG percentage just above Mookie’s at 43.5%. We hope him and Mookie have a good relationship and that Mookie keeps mentoring him during practices. We have high aspirations of Earl at 25 years old to take over the reins for Mookie when he retires.
