With the Inaugural TMBSL draft finally over (as our esteemed fellow general manager, Ianboyd, put it, "50 hr draft = ffffuuuuu") it is time to rate how everyone fared.
Atlanta Hawks
Selections: 1.7 Kevin Garnett (PF 6'11" 220 25 A- C+ C+ A B B); 2.12 Antawn Jamison (SF 6'9'' 223 25 A- B- C B+ C+ B);2.23 Jamal Mashburn (SF 6'8'' 241 28 B B C+ B C+ A); 3.15 Nick Van Exel (PG 6'1'' 190 29 C+ A- A B- D+ C)
I really like how the Hawks went about their draft. He picked up a bonifide superstar in Kevin Garnett and a great number two in Jamison. I think it’s easy to see this team is going to score some points. Will be interested to see if any position changes occur in order to get Garnett, Jamison, and Mashburn on the court at the same time but these four are about as solid of a core as found in the draft.
Grade: A
Boston Celtics
Selections:1.20 Gilbert Arenas (SG 6'3'' 191 19 C+ B- C B- C- A);1.24 Michael Redd (SG 6'6'' 214 22 C+ B C C C A); 2.11 Chris Webber (PF 6'10'' 245 28 A C- C A B- C); 3.19 Brad Miller (C 7'0'' 261 25 C+ C- C B+ B+ C); 4.11 Morris Peterson (SF 6'7'' 218 24 C B C B C A); 4.22 Damon Stoudamire (PG 5'10'' 171 28 C+ B+ A- A- C- C)
Celtics are appearing to be well-stocked for a playoff run with a balanced offense/defense team. While I think they reached in a few places, Redd sticks out especially, overall they have some players that can score and defend. While Miller won’t wow anyone, he is a solid center and he and Webber should work well together down low. Stoudamire was a great find in the late 4th.
Grade: B
Charlotte Eastern Conference Powerhouse Hornets
Selections: 1.9 Rashard Lewis (SF 6'10'' 215 22 B- A- C B- B- B); 2.21 Derek Anderson (SG 6'5'' 195 27 B- A- B B C C); 3.20 Danny Fortson (PF 6'8'' 260 25 B C- C- C A B); 4.10 Darrell Armstrong (PG 6'1'' 180 33 C A- A- A- C C)
An interesting first four rounds for the Eastern Conference Powerhouse Hornets. While I love Rashard Lewis, don’t know if 9 was the appropriate place for him. May have been able to trade down a bit to pick him up later in the 1st. However, can’t fault the owner too much as he was the best SF available. Anderson and Armstrong are two guys who will light it up from outside and provide the perimeter points for this squad. Fortson will help rebounding and put some points in the basket, but not a strong power forward for what was available, I had Michael Bradley and Glenn Robinson rated higher. (It has been pointed out that Robinson is not a power forward so disregard that comment. Still would have taken him as a small forward ahead of Fortson though)
Grade: B-
Chicago Bulls
Selections: 1.12 Tracy McGrady (SG 6'8'' 210 22 A- B B B+ C+ C); 1.22 Pau Gasol (PF 7'0'' 227 21 B C D+ B+ C B); 3.5 Jamal Crawford (PG 6'6'' 185 21 C B B- B- D+ B); 3.12 Hidayet Turkoglu (SF 6'8'' 20 22 C+ B- C B- C B); 3.22 Troy Murphy (PF 6'11'' 245 21 B C+ C B- C B)
The Bulls traded several future picks to obtain a second first rounder and two thirds but they did do well with their selections. The McGrady and Gasol combination may be one of the strongest in the league and with their other pieces, the team could compete for a championship in the upcoming years. T-Mac has potential to be a superstar and to get him at pick 12 was a steal.
Grade: A-
Cleveland Cavaliers
Selections: 1.21 Elton Brand (PF 6'8'' 260 22 A- C- C A- B- B); 2.9 Stephon Marbury (PG 6'2'' 180 24 B+ B A- B+ D+ C); 3.21 Jason Collins (C 7' 260 22 B- C+ C B C+ B); 4.9 Ruben Patterson (SF 6'5'' 224 26 A- C- C A C+ C)
To be perfectly honest, Cleveland’s draft was one of my least favorite upon review. I feel like Brand and Marbury are the only two legit players selected. While Collins has potential, don’t know if he was worth the 3rd round pick but there was a run on centers near that time. Patterson may prove me wrong but I don’t like a starting SF to have a C+ in rebounding when your center is the same. While they may prove me wrong, I have a feeling the Cavs will be back in the lottery next year.
Grade: C
Dallas Mavericks
Selections: 1.2 Tim Duncan (PF 7'0'' 260 25 A C C A A- B); 1.16 Ray Allen (SG 6'5'' 205 26 B A- B B- C C); Richard Jefferson (SF 6'7'' 222 21 B- C C B- C A)
The Mavs are another team who had a completely different scheme when it came to the draft. The owner decided to trade away most future picks in an effort to pick up talent now, but not sure how well that will turn out in the future. For now, it’s tough to find a better top 3 in the Western Conference. With Duncan down low and Allen shooting the three ball, plenty of scoring opportunities await the Dallas Mavericks.
Grade: A-
Denver Nuggets
Selections: 2.6 Zachary Randolph (PF 6'9'' 270 20 B D+ C C+ B- A); 2.10 Ron Artest (SF 6'7'' 246 21 C C+ C A C A); 3.9 Larry Hughes (SG 6'5'' 185 22 B C+ B- B+ C B); 3.17 Joel Przbilla (C 7'1'' 255 22 C- F+ D- B- B- A)
The future is bright for the Nuggets. Of their four players selected, three have “A” potential and they also picked up a future 1st in their trade of their own in this year’s draft. However, this team may have some problems putting the ball in the basket and that could translate in a few years in the lottery for the Nuggets. We’ll see how this emphasis on potential pans out.
Grade: C+
Golden State Warriors
Selections: 1.5 Steve Nash (PG 6'3'' 195 27 C+ A- A- B- C- A); 2.25 Allan Houston (SG 6'6'' 200 30 B A C+ C C- C); 4.25 Dikembe Mutombo (C 7'2'' 265 35 C+ C- D+ A A C)
Nash was easily the best selection that could’ve been made in the 5 spot. However, the same cannot be said for the other two selections. Houston will be able to score but won’t do anything else for the team and may have already seen his better years. Mutombo is a defensive force, but to have a 7’2” center without the ability to score will be a liability. We will see how the future 1st rounders obtained will help to bolster this team in the future.
Grade: C-
Houston Rockets
Selections: 1.8 Rockets- Vince Carter (SG 6'6'' 225 24 A- A- C+ B+ C B); 2.22 Zydrunas Ilgauskas (C 7'3'' 260 26 B C- D+ A- B B); 3.8 Shane Battier (SF 6'8'' 220 23 C+ B C A C A);
Well as Meatloaf said, two out of three ain’t bad. I love the bookend picks of Carter and Battier here by the Rockets GM. Carter is going to be a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball and Battier is a defensive specialist. While Ilgauskas has the right stats, I just feel there’s something there that’s going to keep him from being a star in the league. I can understand the need for a center there, but would have gone with another big man, such as Jamal Mashburn or Kenyon Martin with the pick. Still, can’t fault the guy too much for taking a player with solid stats, just because I wouldn’t have done it myself. Good foundation to build off of.
Grade: A-
Indiana Pacers
Selections: 1.25 Tony Parker (PG 6'2'' 177 19 C C B+ B- D A); 2.5 Lamar Odom (SF 6'10" 213 21 B- B- C+ B+ B); 2.25 Gerald Wallace (SF 6'7'' 215 19 C+ D+ C B- C+ A); 4.5 Quentin Richardson (SG 6'6'' 223 21 B C+ C C+ C+ B)
Talk about a team with some promise for the future. Watch out folks because in 3 years, the Pacers could be running the league with this young nucleus. Indiana got the youthful, promising PG everyone is always looking for in Tony Parker and then backed him up with another 19 year old “A” potential guy in Gerald Wallace. Odom and Richardson are both 21 year old “B” potentials with solid stats to come in and contribute right away. Love the way the Pacers brass handled their selections and this is one of my top 5 drafts.
Grade: A
LA Clippers
Selections: 1.15 Steve Francis (PG 6'3'' 193 24 B A- B A- C B); 2. 15 Marcus Camby (C 6'11'' 225 27 C+ C- C- A A- B); 2.17 Jason Terry (SG 6'2'' 172 24 C+ A- B B D+ B); 4.15 James Posey (SF 6'8'' 215 24 C B C B C+ B)
The Clippers…the place where careers go to die. I don’t see this sim as being too much different to be honest. While Francis was solid at 15, there were some other guys out there, such as Parker or Mike Bibby available at the PG spot who I had rated higher. Marcus Camby is going to be a liability in the offensive paint for the clippers but Posey should be able to help out a little bit there to make up for his lackluster defense. Terry should be a solid offensive threat, but again has a hole in his game with his “D+” on rebounding. This team better be able to make its shots and stops on defense because teams are going to own the boards against them.
Grade: C
LA Lakers
Selections: 1.10 Jason Kidd (PG 6'4'' 212 28 B B A A+ C B); 2.20 Tim Thomas (SF 6'10'' 230 24 C+ A- C A- C); 3.10 Tyson Chandler (PF 7'0'' 235 19 C+ D C B C+ A); 3.16 Samuel Dalembert (C 6'11'' 250 20 C+ D D- A- C+ B)
Like their LA counterparts, the Lakers also decided to go PG first round but had the luxury of getting to pick 5 spots ahead and take their guy in Jason Kidd. Solid pickup. Thomas should be able to help on both ends of the floor and should be a guy the Lakers can depend on. I’m really interested to see how 19 year old Chandler develops because he could either be a big star or big dud.
Grade: B
Memphis Grizzlies
Selections: 2.14 Alonzo Mourning (C 6'10'' 258 31 A- C- C- A+ B+ C); 2.28 Kenyon Martin (PF 6'9'' 230 23 B D C B+ C+ A); 4.14 John Stockton (PG 6'1'' 175 39 C A- A+ A C- C); 4.20 Latrell Sprewell (SG 6'5'' 190 31 B+ B C+ A- C- C); 4.28 Mike Miller (SF 6'8'' 218 21 C B+ C C+ C B)
The Grizz were a team that traded away their first round pick to acquire some additional ones in the early rounds and we’ll see how that affects their squad by not being able to grab that initial elite player. They went for a lot of experience mixed in with some youthful exuberance which may work out as most teams went one way or the other. Zo , Sprewell, and Stockton bring in plenty of veteran years that should give the Grizz some wins in their first few years. However, their young guys in Martin and Miller will need to develop in order to take the torch as these older guys flame out. Martin has the potential to be a force down low very early on should he rein in the anger issues everyone has talked about recently. Sparks could fly between he and Sprewell. Should be fun to watch.
Grade: B-
Miami Heat
Selections: 1.13 Paul Pierce (SF 6'7'' 220 24 A- B+ C A C B); 3.13 Eddie Griffin (PF 6'9'' 220 19 C+ C C A C+ A);
With only two selections in the first four rounds, it’s pretty hard to grade the Heat. I will say that Pierce is a guy to build the team around and he will be able to give them a chance to win on most nights. Griffin was a guy that should be able to handle most teams big men on the defensive side but needs to improve offensively to justify his selection.
Grade: N/A (Too few draft picks)
Milwaukee Bucks
Selections: 1.19 Eric Chenowith (C 7'1'' 270 22 C+ D+ D+ B- B- C); 3.24 Omar Cook (PG 6'1'' 190 19 C C+ B+ B D B); 4.6 Glenn Robinson (SF 6'7'' 235 28 A- B- C B C+ C)
Where to begin? Chenowith may be the biggest overreach I’ve ever seen in any draft, any format. That alone warrants the grade that was given to the Bucks draft. Cook will be a serviceable PG, but never anything near what is needed to reach the playoffs. While Robinson will help on both sides of the ball, he can in no way make up for the colossal mistake of the center that the Bucks have chosen to build their team around.
Grade: F
Minnesota Fighting Kahns
Selections: 2.7 Brendan Haywood (C 7'0'' 268 21 B- D C- A C+ A); 4.7 Stromile Swift (PF 6'9'' 225 21 B- D+ D+ A- C+ A); 2.16 Doug Christie (SG 6'6'' 205 31 C+ A- C+ A C- C); 2.24 Jamaal Tinsley (PG 6'3'' 185 23 C C+ B A- D+ B)
Another draft that I’m not too keen on. While Swift was one of my most desired players, I think he and Haywood are the only two players on the team that will be good in this league. Even with that, odds are that both of them will not live up to their “A” potential. I like the T’Wolves picking up two future firsts, but again, those don’t factor into the grades. Looks like Minnesota is another team destined for lottery status next year.
Grade:C-
New Jersey Nets
Selections: 1.4 Allen Iverson (SG 6'0'' 165 26 A- B B A C- A); 1.23 Shawn Marion (SF 6'7'' 215 23 B C+ C A A- B); 2.16 Ben Wallace (PF 6'9'' 240 27 C+ D- C A A- B)
Another team that has been built around three guys in a hope they can lead them to a championship. AI is the player I most coveted in the draft so to get him at 4 was a huge steal in my eyes. The Nets saw another opportunity to grab an elite guy and traded back into the first round to grab The Matrix, a 23 SF who can step in right away and be one of the best in the league. Big Ben is one of the best defenders in the league and despite his 6’9” size will be able to defend any big man that tries to come down on the blocks.
Grade: A
New York Knicks
Selections: 1.11 Baron Davis PG 6'3'' 212 22 (B+ B- A- A- C B); 2.19 Antoine Walker (PF 6'9'' 245 25 B B C+ B- C+ B); 3.11 Mehmet Okur (C 6'11'' 249 22 C+ B D B- C+ B); 4.19 Aaron McKie (SG 6'5'' 209 29 C+ B- B- B+ C A)
Quite an enigma of a draft. While I like the players selected, I feel that each could have been gotten at a few picks lower. Davis is a shoot first point guard so it will be interesting to see how he deals with distributing the ball to his teammates, although none of them are true offensive threats. The Knicks will have to hope that their later rounds found some diamonds if they hope to contend for a playoff spot this year. This core group just isn’t going to do it. However, they could develop as they age and for that, I give the Knicks scouting department some credit.
Grade: B
Orlando Magic
Selections: 1.28 Shareef Abdur-Rahim (SF 6'9'' 230 24 A- C C A- B- B); 2.2 Rasheed Wallace (PF 6'11'' 230 27 A- B- C A- B- C); 3.17 Sam Cassell (PG 6'3'' 185 31 B+ B- A- B C- C); 3.28 Cuttino Mobley (SG 6'4'' 190 27 B- B+ C+ B- C B); 4.2 Hakeem Olajuwon (C 7'0'' 255 38 B D+ C A+ B C)
The Magic management is definitely of the belief that championships are won with the front court. Taking two forwards and a center in the first 4 rounds shows this belief as all three are guys who have been in the league for a while and know what it takes to get it done. Abdur-Rahim, Wallace, and Olajuwon will be able to have their way defensively with any other frontcourt on a nightly basis. Teams will be lucky to score any points in the paint against that trio. If they could get some solid offensive play from their backcourt, the Magic could be a dark horse contender.
Grade: B+
Philadelphia 76ers
Selections: 2.8 Grant Hill (SF 6'8'' 225 29 A B C+ B C B); 2.13 Antonio McDyess (PF 6'9'' 245 27 A- C- C B+ A- C); 4.18 Speedy Claxton (PG 5'11'' 165 23 C C A- A- D+ B)
I truly don’t have much to say about this draft. Hill should still be a solid player for the 76ers but we will see if his health continues to hold up as it has already shown some signs of faltering. McDyess is just hitting the prime of his career so he should be a solid pick in the mid 2nd. Claxton will need to find guys to distribute the ball to as he is not one that will get it done on the offense himself. Once again, not having a 1st will hurt the team in this grading but does not factor in the additional futures picks that were received.
Grade: C+
Phoenix Suns
Selections: 1.18 Jermaine O'Neal (C 6'11'' 230 23 B D+ C- A B+ B); 2.26 Scottie Pippen (SF 6'8'' 228 36 B B B- A C C); 3.23 David Robinson (C 7'1'' 250 36 B C- C A+ B C)
Well the Suns are another team basing their draft on the big men. However, they went with one young guy and two older players who are well past their prime. It is obvious that O’Neal will be moved, more than likely to PF but I don’t know if he can bang bodies with those types of players on a nightly basis. The age of these players makes me question whether the Suns owner made the right choices as it won’t be long until they are gone. We have got to be under the assumption the brass believes they can find younger talent in future drafts to take over for Pippen and Robinson.
Grade: C
Portland Trailblazers
Selections: 1.29 Eddy Curry (C 6'11'' 285 18 B D+ C- C+ C+ A); 2.1 Richard Hamilton (SG 6'7'' 193 23 B+ B- C+ B- C- A); 3.3 Andre Miller (PG 6'2'' 200 25 B+ C+ A- B C C); 3.29 Joe Smith (PF 6'10'' 225 26 B+ C- C B+ B- D)
The Blazers may have gotten the steal of the draft in finding Miller in the third. The youthful trio of Curry, Hamilton, and Miller will surely develop into a fearsome group that could rival Dallas’ big three in the near future. Smith is a huge option down low and is very nice on the defensive side as well, it could just be that his prime is over. The Blazers are a team to keep an eye on in the West.
Grade: B+
Sacramento Kings
Selections: 1.26 Mike Bibby (PG 6'2'' 190 23 C B+ A- B C- B); 2.4 Jerry Stackhouse (SG 6'6'' 218 26 A- B+ C+ B- C- B); 3.26 Michael Bradley (PF 6'10" 245 22 B+ C C B C+ A); 4.4 Marc Jackson (C 6'10'' 270 26 B- C C- B- B- B); 4.21 (Michael Finley SG 6'7" 215 28 B- B B B C C)
As soon as the pick of Stackhouse was made, the claim was that the Kings had the backcourt that was “Best in the West.” While that remains to be seen, the optimism of the management is without fault. Those two, along with the veteran Finley, combine to form a backcourt that can do it all. This team will be predicated on offense as their defense is not too strong, but should be able to outscore most opponents.
Grade: B+
San Antonio Spurs
Selections: 1.27 Joe Johnson (SF 6'8'' 225 20 C+ B- C+ C+ C A); 2.3 Kwame Brown (PF 6'11'' 240 19 B D+ C- B- C A); 3.27 Jeff Foster (C 6'11'' 242 24 C D+ C- B- A- B); 4.3 Kenny Satterfield (PG 6'2'' 186 20 C C+ B- B- C- A)
As one who loved drafting on potential, the Spurs draft felt wonderful to me. To get guys like Johnson and Brown, who will be able to contribute immediately while still developing into the stars they are projected, were great pickups by the Spurs. Foster will be able to help Brown on the rebounding side so Kwame can focus on improving his defensive skills. Satterfield is another “A” potential that was coveted by many teams in the draft. We should see soon how this draft works out for the Spurs as it is another “high-risk, high-reward” draft. The grade has to be adjusted however in case any of these players flop, which is a probability.
Grade: B-
Seattle Supersonics
Selections: 1.6 Dirk Nowitzki (SF 7'0'' 250 23 B A- C B- B- B); 1.14 Chauncey Billups (SG 6'3'' 202 25 C+ B+ B+ C+ C- A); 3.6 Andrei Kirilenko (SF 6'9'' 205 20 C+ C+ C B+ C A); 3.14 Stephen Jackson (SG 6'8'' 218 23 C+ C+ B C+ C B)
This may my favorite draft, although debatable. The management did a great job in acquiring young talent that has already proven themselves along with having the ability to develop even further. The two first round draftees in Nowitzki and Billups are guys that should shine together for years to come. Kirilenko has the ability to learn from Nowitzki as he goes and that could prove to be invaluable. The Sonics draft crew did an outstanding job and should be commended as much.
Grade: A
Toronto Raptors
Selections: 1.1 Kobe Bryant (SG 6'7'' 215 23 A- B B A C B); 2.29 Karl Malone (PF 6'9'' 256 38 A C C+ A- B+ C); 3.1 Michael Jordan (SF 6'6'' 216 38 A B C+ A- C+ C); 4.29 Theo Ratliff (C 6'10'' 225 28 C+ C- C- A+ B- C)
Already deemed by many as the favorites to win the first title, the Raptors have to be given credit for their draft. Although it helps to have the first pick, the management was shrewd enough to realize that given the ability to take aging stars such as Malone and Jordan will only help the young superstar Bryant on their march to the title. It never hurts to add the greatest player of all time in the third round, even if he is on his last legs. Jordan and Malone are both scoring threats every night that will draw defenses away from Bryant so he can go on his run as the best player in the league. This team is a scary one and I will go on record now saying I believe they are the first champions of TMBSL.
Grade: A+
Utah Jazz
Selections: 2.24 Corey Maggette (SG 6'6'' 218 21 A- C+ C+ C+ C+ B); 3.4 Gary Payton (PG 6'4'' 180 33 C+ B+ A- A+ C- C); 3.7 Raef LaFrentz (C 6'11'' 240 25 B- B- C A C+ B); 3.18 Eddie Jones (SG 6'6'' 200 30 B A- C+ A- C C); 4.12 Jonathan Bender (SF 6'11'' 198 20 C C C C D+ A); 4.23 DeShawn Stevenson (SG 6'5'' 210 20 C C- C C- D A) 4.27 Kedrick Brown (SF 6'7'' 222 20 B- C C C+ C A)
With seven guys drafted in the first four rounds, the Jazz were easily the most active team early. While the quality of players is not outstanding, they are solid bunches who each bring specific qualities to the table. The combination of Maggette and Payton in the backcourt will be one that is tough to handle for many opposing teams. The Glove is known for his tenacious defense and that should help to stop any scoring threats from other teams.LaFrentz and Jones will help on the defensive side while Jones also presents the opportunity to put up points. Stevenson and Brown were brought on for their potential and if they develop, this team could be very scary to go up against.
Grade: A-
Washington Wizards
Selections: 1.3 Shaquille O'Neal (C 7'1'' 330 29 A D+ C A+ A C); 2.18 Predrag Stojakovic (SF 6'9'' 229 24 B A- C B C B); 4.1 Jason Williams (PG 25 C B A- B+ D+ C); 4.27 Bonzi Wells (SG 6'5'' 210 25 A- C B- B+ C+ C)
While they started out very strong with grabbing the most dominant player in the game, O’Neal and then a scoring swingman in Peja, the Wizards were very disappointing with their other picks. Both Williams and Wells will need to step their games up in order to help their team win a championship. The Wizards selections were quite questionable with these two but as long as they have Big Daddy down low, anything is possible.
Grade: B
Notes: Only did first four rounds due to length of draft as those seemed to be where the most action was. Also did not include Detroit Pistons grade due to biasness (So you know, would probably rate myself as a C- due to having such high risk with the youth and potential and not factoring in future picks). Comments are appreciated and would like to see discussion on these grades. Also, obtaining future picks was not factored into the grading. All selections were taken from the Creation Draft Thread and I apologize for any mistakes. If I was hard on your draft, don’t take it as I don’t like you but rather we had differing views. I know many who would kill me for mine.
Final count of grades:
A+ = 1
A = 4
A- = 4
B+ = 3
B = 4
B- = 3
C+ = 2
C = 3
C- = 2 (3 if you count my own)
F = 1
N/A= 1
Atlanta Hawks
Selections: 1.8 Rockets- Vince Carter (SG 6'6'' 225 24 A- A- C+ B+ C B); 2.22 Zydrunas Ilgauskas (C 7'3'' 260 26 B C- D+ A- B B); 3.8 Shane Battier (SF 6'8'' 220 23 C+ B C A C A);
Well as Meatloaf said, two out of three ain’t bad.
Grade: B-
Miami Heat
Selections: 1.13 Paul Pierce (SF 6'7'' 220 24 A- B+ C A C B); 3.13 Eddie Griffin (PF 6'9'' 220 19 C+ C C A C+ A);
With only two selections in the first four rounds, it’s pretty hard to grade the Heat.
