OJ Mayo has been one of the most hyped high school basketball recruits since he first burst onto the national radar as an 8th grader. With the constant media attention, it was inevitable there would be a backlash, which is exactly what happened in his senior year as he returned to West Virginia to play at Huntington High. He fell from the top 3 in the Rivals 100, and he drew the ire of many sportswriters and fans when he seemed to want to play 1 on 5 basketball in the McDonalds All American Game. Mayo the spectacle seemed to take the focus off of Mayo the player. But should he decide to go to the NBA, his play is all that matters. Offensively, Mayo has an NBA-ready skill (his jumpshot) that will make him productive from the get-go. His form is picture perfect, and he can hit from deep. Shot selection can be a problem at times. Mayo's mid-range game looks tailor-made for the league, as he uses a variety of hesitation moves and fadeaways to get buckets. He isn't the freak athlete that some of the other HS phenoms have been, but he has enough leaping ability to get to the rim and finish when he beats his defender off the dribble. Mayo's ball-handling is good, although sometimes he gets stubborn with the ball in his hands, attempting to dribble through traps and double teams. When he is looking to get his teammates involved, he is a good passer, unfortunately it just isn't displayed nearly enough. On the defensive end, Mayo doesn’t appear to give great effort unless the guy he is guarding challenges him intently with the ball. If he is beat, he seems to give up on the play, and sometimes shows that he doesn’t really understand the concept of how to play help defense. The potential is there to be a good defender, but effort is what matters.
