2002 First Round
1. Nets - C Yao Ming
Then: B+ C C B- B- B
Now: A- C C+ B B C
Yao has turned into a force for the rebuilding Nets, averaging 25.9/10.3/5.1 a game. Improvements on defense could turn him into an MVP candidate.
2. Pacers - SF Carmelo Anthony
Then: A- D+ C- C- C A
Now: B B C A B A
Anthony came in to the league very raw but Indiana's patience was rewarded this season. Sporting a 18.3/7.2/3.1 line, Anthony still shows room to improve into a star and lead the Pacers into their first post season soon.
3. Suns - PF Amare Stoudamire
Then: A- D+ C- C- C A
Now: A D C- B B A
We always knew he could score (23.4 ppg), but the question was would he be able to rebound and defend in the TMBSL. With 9.3 boards and almost a steal/block per game, he is developing nicely in those areas as the cornerstone of the Suns.
4. Pistons - PG Jay Williams
Then: B- C B- C+ C A
Now: B- C+ B A- C A
Whether you consider him a true point or not, Williams has developed into a nice player in this league with room to improve. Now with the Bulls, he sports a line of 17.8/5.2/6.8 an is a very good defensive player.
5. Suns - PF Nene
Then: C+ D+ C- C+ B A
Now: B- D+ C- B+ A- B
Another young stud who has made his way to Chicago, Nene averages a double-double at 12.7 points and 10.7 boards. Only 21, offensive improvement could push him from complimentary piece to star.
6. Grizzlies - PG Dajuan Wagner
Then: C+ B+ C- C C- A
Now: B- A C C- C- A
Wagner wasn't truly allowed to flourish until he was moved to SG. At 22.3 points a game he can fill it up, but needs to become a more well-rounded player for Memphis to get to the next level.
7. Spurs - SG Manu Ginobili
Then: C B B- B C B
Now: C B+ B+ B+ C B
Manu isn't a star, but he is a jack-of-all trades for his current team, Atlanta. Solid scorer who can handle the ball and defend well.
8. Pistons - PF Drew Gooden
Then: B- C- C- C+ B A
Now: C+ C- C- B- B B
Gooden was once the best piece back in a Tim Duncan trade, but is now an afterthought sent to Portland for salary cap reasons. He's appeared in 3 games this season. Ladies and gentleman, our first bust.
9. Wolves - SF Caron Butler
Then: B- C+ C C+ C+ A
Now: B- C+ C+ B C+ A
Butler's ratings haven't drastically changed, but he performs anyway. At 20.8/5.4/3.2 he is the best of the young 02's that have ended up as Bulls.
10. Suns - SG Jared Jefferies
Then: B- C C C+ C+ A
Now: B- C C B- C+ B
Jefferies is a solid bench player for the Blazers but that role is his ceiling. He will stick around the TMBSL for a while due to his ability to play multiple positions.
11. Kings - SF Tayshaun Prince
Then: B- C C+ B- C+ B
Now: B C+ C+ A- C+ B
Prince was targeted by Sacramento as a defensive wing stopper, and has developed into that role nicely. Surprisingly, his offense has come along nicely and his 14.6/6.5 line has helped the Kings make noise in the west.
12. 76ers - PF Luis Scola
Then: C+ C C- C C A
Now: B- C C- C+ C C
Scola has yet to see a game after being traded to the Nuggets, and for good reason. At the end of his contract, going back overseas may be his best bet as he isn't TMBSL material.
13. Knicks - PF Nikoloz Tskitishvili
Then: C C+ C C B A
Now: C+ C+ C C A- B
His name is a pain for announcers, but luckily for them he doesn't give them much reason to say his name. He averaged 9.0 rebounds a game as a rookie, but that is the only skill he possesses to this date and his PT has dwindled.
14. Clippers - SG Kareem Rush
Then: C+ B C C C A
Now: C A- C+ B- C+ B
Rush has switched teams a few times already but he is a solid player. The 3pt marksman has a 13.8/6.9/4.5 line on 42% from behind the arc, and is a solid defender.
15. Blazers - SF Qyntel Woods
Then: C+ C+ C C C A
Now: C+ B- C C+ C C
Woods came into the league extremely raw, and that's how he will leave it in one year. Even worse, he cost his current 76er team stud PF Melvin Ely in a one-for-one swap.
16. Eastern Conference Powerhouse Hornets - SG Fred Jones
Then: B C+ C C C A
Now: B+ B C+ B- C B
Some call him a combo guard, others call him a tweener. Either way, he is a nice scoring weapon off of the bench for the high powered Eastern Conference Powerhouse Hornets.
17. Cavaliers - SG Juan Dixon
Then: C B C C+ C B
Now: C B+ C B- C D
Dixon is a low upside backup guard who has struggled to find his 3pt stroke this season (30%). Cavs could have done worse with this pick but they could have done better.
18. Lakers - PF Ryan Humphrey
Then: B- D C- B- C+ B
Now: B D C B+ B- B
Ryan Humphrey, 2 Time All-Star. 16.1 points, 9.3 boards, and amazing 3.4 blocks per game this season, Humphrey is one of the steals of the draft for the Lakers.
19. Rockets - PF Chris Wilcox
Then: C+ D C C+ C A
Now: B- D C B C+ B
Wilcox has seen his first real action this year as he was buried on some very deep Rockets teams. He has seen solid development, but is probably suited best for a bench role. 4.6 boards and 1.1 blocks in 18 MPG.
20. Bulls - SG Ronald Murray
Then: C B B- C C B
Now: C A- B- C C B
"Flip" has developed into a nice scorer (15.5 ppg in '03) but has found himself glued to the bench behind Jason Kapono in Dallas. He will await a change of scenery or a moment of clarity by the Dallas owner to resume his career.
21. Kings - SG Casey Jacobsen
Then: C B+ C C- D B
Now: C B+ C C- D- C
Jacobsen is a solid 3pt shooter but a liablity everywhere else. Does a fine job as the token white guy on the end of Sacramento's bench, and is a good celebrator of Jermaine O'Neal rejections.
22. Bucks - C Curtis Borchardt
Then: C+ D+ C- C+ C+ A
Now: C+ C- D+ C+ B- A
Borchardt remains a raw project C, but since 7 footers don't grow on trees he will stick around a little longer. Bucks will hope new C Shaquille O'Neal can show him some pointers in practice.
23. Lakers - PG Juan Carlos Navarro
Then: C C B C C A
Now: C C+ B C C D
Navarro is so bad he isn't even on an active roster. How do you say 'bust' in Spanish?
24. 76ers - PF Melvin Ely
Then: C+ D C- B B C
Now: B- D+ D+ A- A B
The second PF drafted by the 76ers, Ely became one of the steals of the draft while Luis Scola busted. Too bad for the 76ers, as the Jazz are reaping the benefits. Ely is one of the better rebounders in the league at 12.2 a game and is an excellent defender.
25. Warriors - SG John Salmons
Then: C C+ C+ C+ C B
Now: C C+ C+ B+ C A
Salmons has a small bench role for the Warriors now, but has the potential for a bigger role going forward. Golden State would love to see some scoring improvement from him.
26. Bullets - PF Nenad Kristic
Then: C C+ C+ C- C- A
Now: C C+ C B- C- A
Kristic came over as an extremely raw 17 year old, and hasn't shown much progression. He's grown physically from 6'11" 210 to 7'0" 225, but hasn't carved out a role in Washington's rotation.
27. Heat - SG Roger Mason, Jr.
Then: C C+ C+ C C- A
Now: C+ B C C+ C B
Mason is a bench player with a solid outside shot for Miami. He's shot 46.2 percent from outside the arc in limited action this season. And is at 39.8% in 176 career games.
28. Eastern Conference Powerhouse Hornets - SG Jiri Welsch
Then: C+ C+ C+ C C- A
Now: C+ B- C+ C C- C
Another foreigner picked late with less than desired results, Welsch has yet to see any playing time the past two seasons.
29. Raptors - SF Boston Nachbar
Then: C C+ C C B- A
Now: C B C- C- B- D
Nachbar can hit from outside and rebound well, but hasn't been able to get PT for this year's Raptor squad. Very limited upside.
Best of the Second Round:
Kings - Udonis Haslem (B- C C B- B- B)
Now with the Clippers, averaging 14.6 points and 9.4 boards as the starting PF
Suns - Matt Barnes (B- B- C A- C B)
Solid bench player for the Juggernaut Celtics, there are plenty of teams he would start for.
1. Nets - C Yao Ming
Then: B+ C C B- B- B
Now: A- C C+ B B C
Yao has turned into a force for the rebuilding Nets, averaging 25.9/10.3/5.1 a game. Improvements on defense could turn him into an MVP candidate.
