Inside = B-: A bit mechanical in the post, Williams has a decent post repertoire, but is much more comfortable scoring on putbacks. Shot 57% or better from the field his last 3 years at Duke, increasing his scoring output each year in school. Won’t be able to bully his way to the basket in the pros like he did at Duke.
Outside = D+: Has limited range, you don’t want him shooting past 15 feet.
Handling = D+: Nobody will ever confuse Shelden with Karl Malone running the floor. Not a good passer, even for a big man.
Defense = B: Nicknamed “The Landlord” in college, Williams won national defensive player of the year as a junior. Fundamentally sound footwork. Averaged nearly 4 BPG his senior year.
Rebounding = B-: Williams possesses a chiseled frame and a blue-collar approach that makes him an outstanding rebounder at the collegiate level. Although he isn’t the prototypical height for a PF (and definitely not for a C), he has a good wingspan that should help him in the NBA.
Potential = B: The good news is Williams is one of the most likely players in the entire 06 class to step in and contribute right away. The bad news is teams looking for a potential franchise player to build around probably won’t find that in Williams, who lacks the upside that most lottery teams covet.
