1. WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING!?
A: At the time, I was thinking that I was never going to win with Duncan, and that I wouldn’t have gotten the correct pieces to surround Duncan with in Big D. So I decided to trade him away for younger players and draft picks. Probably the stupidest thing I could have done is put a deadline on the trade instead of letting it play out over the next couple of days before the deadline was here. With the Pistons deal, I was first enamored with it because he was the first one to offer me a deal for Duncan. Secondly because for some reason I looked at each player’s stats that he was offering me and they seemed good enough. Finally I figured that I would cut salary and fully rebuild, but foolishly of me forgetting that there are not any free agents worth anything for the next year. In the end, only Gooden remains on the team from the trade. I gave up Kenny Thomas and the players I got from the Ray Allen trade for most of my young roster I have today including starters Samuel Dalembert and Eddie House. I gave up Wally Z for my starting SF right now in Mike Miller, and as for the very important 2 draft picks I traded them to the Bulls for starting SG Ronald Murray and project SG Sasha Pavlovic. Now would I trade Duncan again, probably, but definitely not for that package.
2. We all know you have made some amazing deals to "clear cap space" and get younger, so what really is your plan? Is the draft the key? Is Free Agency the next two seasons going to be your splash? Who are your players that you plan to be untouchable moving forward?
A: My plan for the future of the Dallas Mavericks is definitely through the Draft. Hopefully we will add a difference maker every year through it and make our team a contender at the end of the day. We have most if not all of our important picks for future drafts and we could add some more picks if the right offer comes on the table. We will probably have some activity in free agency when the playmakers are available, but for now we are happy with the fact that we haven’t really been a player in it due to the fact we did not think there were too many difference makers and we didn’t want to overpay for someone and cost us a chance at a star in the future. We don’t like to call our star players “untouchable” because we feel like any of them could be traded for the right price. If I had to choose some players, they would definitely be center Samuel Dalembert and shooting guard Ronald Murray for right now. Point guard Eddie House is on the brink of being on the list, but we feel as of right now that we could get a better “true” point guard for the future. Dalembert is what we want out of a center, someone who can lead us in rebounding and has the ability to block and alter shots down low, and the fact that he is only 22 makes us favor him that much more. While Ronald Murray could be a good 20+ ppg scorer for us and that we want at shooting guard, and the fact that he has the ability to see time at point guard helps us a ton.
3. How good would Arenas, Nene and friends look in a Mavs uni right about now?
A: They would have looked awesome in Dallas and in a Mavericks uniform right now. Especially since our weakness is at PF, and Nene could have filled that in for years to come and teamed up nicely with Dalembert in the paint. Arenas, we weren’t too high on which was the main reason we didn’t like the Suns deal at the time, but we saw the improvement he made in this last training camp and could have used him at either point guard or shooting guard. We love both Murray and House but he would have been a definite improvement.
4. If there was one player on the Mavs you'd say you are specifically building your team around, who would that be?
A: Samuel Dalembert. Like I said earlier, he is exactly what we are looking for in a center. Hopefully he keeps on improving like he did this last training camp, and moving forward in his career with us.
5. If you could go back and not trade duncan would you? Are the Mavs happy with how their organization wants if so why if not why?
A: We would have still traded Duncan, but not that fast or for the package that we did receive in the end. In the end, in our opinion we got better young prospects and better picks for the trash that we got Duncan for. We would definitely not do that deal again, but right now we are happy where our organization is and we are hoping the future is bright for us in Big D.
