"You're a new owner. When you took the Bucks over, what did you feel were the biggest immediate changes that needed to be made, and have you made them?"
First and foremost. I want to thank you for asking a question. That being said;I felt that in order to make the Bucks better I had to spread out my more valuable pieces by making them available. I felt that I could climb up the hill faster , by getting much younger and taking chances on multiple players with decent potential and hoping for the best. Another thing I wanted to improve on this team was the lack of draft picks. In most of my trades I've attempted to at least get a pick back or a future draft pick exemption. In order for my team to fully compete though; I feel like I need to get lucky and hit in the lottery while keeping my core pieces Chandler/Cook together. Here is to hoping a couple years we will be landing some Free Agents. We will always be looking to deal to make our team better. I also felt the need to establish a certain identity with our team. We're looking to run and gun. Think of a shittier worse defensive D'Antoni ran Phoenix Suns. Basically we will be the Knicks
"How has the, for a lack of a better word, shitty training camp affected your plans"?
As much as I would like to say otherwise it has very much hurt our organization. The team has nobody to blame except themselves and Eric Chenowith. He is the cancer that keeps on giving. We feel his attitude instilled shitty work ethic and he proved that you don't need to care/improve to be a first round pick. We feel that with the help of radiology and a new work ethic we are turning the corner. While the training camp was hard on some , others took it as a chance to get better. If I had to single out a couple players that really took this training camp serious I would give the knod to Omar Cook who improved his Defense, which we needed as he will be bearing the load as the starting Pg. Kyle Korver who has tried to help out his offensive game by working on his mid range shot to go along with his deadly 3. Tyson Chandler took a step back defensively this year. And while we're not to excited about that he +2'd on Reb's and got better down low. The sky is the limit for Tyson. And then there is Xue Yuyang who improved his defense. Coincidentally the 2 rookies hadn't ever talked to Eric Chenowith nor heard of him. Coincidence? I think not
"Are you worried that the upcoming free agents will pull a Gary Coleman and turn down lucrative offers to sign with more competitive teams? Also, is Erick Barkley your long term solution at the point"?
Very worried. We're hoping young players such as Gary will think about becoming part of something special we feel we're building up here in Milwaukee.. But we can't fault Gary for signing with a solid aging Piston team. Maybe he feels he can fill a void when Alonzo leaves. Who knows. You would have to ask him. We certainly felt our 36 million guaranteed was more than fair and competitive enough to land him. You don't often see players turn down 26 + more guaranteed to sign another contract. Perhaps he should fire his agent.
As far as Erick goes, we're very excited to have him on our roster. We've liked since his days at St. Johns. He had a couple set backs in training camp and that's unfortunate, because we wanted him to come in a push Omar Cook for the starters spot. But as of now and going into the future Omar will be given the go ahead. But if he struggles with Turnovers like he did last year. Don't be surprised to see Barkley get some play. That being said. Erick is the primary backup for Wally and Omar. So he should still see 20 minutes per. And were hoping he takes the Sixth man role seriously .
"Whats your 5 year strategy, is it the draft or is it free agency, trades or a mixture of all? How long do you think it will be before the Bucks make the playoffs"?
Our 5 year strategy is rather simple. Compete and get better. We want to make Milwaukee a place where Free Agents want to come and play for championships. We realize that we might have to overspend on certain Free Agents to get them to take a look and put on the green and purple. We will look to keep our payroll at a decent and affordable number and spend on the players we really feel can help us contend. Our vision is starting to come to fruition though. We're already looking forward to the potential 2005 draft. We've been scouting a couple talented Pg's and hoping we have a shot at landing them. Chris Paul and Deron Williams. As far as playoff predictions. We hope we make it every year. You won't ever see this team tank on purpose even in the brutal Eastern conference. We will/would be happy making the playoffs. Even as a 8 seed. Unlike Certain teams out West. Because to be the best you have to beat the best.
"If there is one player you would say you are building your team around, who is it"?
We aren't building around one player. We feel in order to win it's going to be a team process. There are certain players that will have to step up to take this team to the next level. Down low. Teams will be concentrating on 21 year old Tyson Chandler. And for good reason. He's shown flashes , but has been very inconsistent. He still needs to mature and while he's improved his post game in the off-season he took a step back defensively. He took his benching last year and we think it will help him in the long run. As far as scorers go. We will be looking to Wally. He averaged over 20 ppg for us after he left Dallas. And we're hoping the addition of Kyle Korver will take the load of him as well. With a spread out floor and he should see some good looks. As far as running the team We will be looking towards Omar Cook. He's shown tremendous ability in his young career thus far. But he's also shown inconsistencies like Chandler. Before being demoted to the 2nd team last year he was top 3 on Turnovers per game. Turnovers are something that are going to happen with the style we run. But he definitely has to limit them, for this team to get better. It should help having a couple more threats on the Wing for him as well.
