Using a highly complex statistical comparison (% of team average accounted for in the 5 counting categories divided by the mean age of the players) we will look to settle the argument raging in NBA circles about which star laden threesome truly deserves the title of "Ultimate Big 3".
Your candidates:
2003 Averages: 35 / 7 / 5 (Age - 24)
2003 Averages: 23 / 9 / 4 (Age - 39)
2003 Averages - 17 / 4/ 9 (Age: 32)
Toronto, last years unquestioned holder of the Big 3 title with Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, & Karl Malone, once again finds themselves among the 2 or 3 favorites to bring home the TMBSL title this year. Despite the retirement of Jordan, the Raps have barely missed a beat even with Malone missing a large portion of this season due to injury. Last years 4th cog, Terrell Brandon, has stepped up his game without MJ and with the long absense of the aging Mailman. Accounting for slightly over 64% of Toronto's points and over half of the teams rebounds, the only real thing dragging this trio down is Malone's advanced age and perhaps pending retirement.
Percentage of stats accrued by Toronto's Big 3:
Pts - 70.3
Reb - 39.0
Ass. - 72.9
Stl - 56.5
Blk - 25.3
A statistical average of 52.8 divided by a mean age of 31.67 yields :
Big 3 Ratio - 1.67

2003 Averages: 24 / 9/ 3 (Age - 28)
2003 Averages: 19 / 8 / 3 (Age - 25)
2003 Averages: 19 / 4 / 9 (Age - 32)
Back for a second run at the title, Orlando's Big 3 of Sheed, Abdur-Rahim, & Cassell once again have the Magic sitting in the upper tier of the Eastern Conference. The inside presense of Wallace and the backcourt abilities of Cassell are perfectly complimented by the all-around wing play of Abdur-Rahim. With only Cassell above the age of 30 this trio should anchor a continued Magic run at the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
Percentage of stats accrued by Orlando's Big 3:
Pts - 59.6
Reb - 41.5
Ass. - 60.0
Stl - 46.4
Blk - 33.3
A statistical average of 49.52 divided by a mean age of 28.33 yields:
Big 3 Ratio - 1.70

2003 Averages: 22 / 6 / 2 (Age - 26)
2003 Averages: 21 / 6 / 4 (Age - 27)
In their first season together, the Hawks Big 3 of Garnett, Jamison, & Allen got off to a rather sluggish start. Slowed by an early season injury to KG they struggled to a very mediocre 13-12 start and there were whispers that perhaps they couldn't co-exist. Since that point however, the ATL has raced to an outstanding 21-4 stretch. The only 3 teammates in TMBSL to all average above 20 points per night, this is a group that has come to thrive on picking the one who is having an off night up and leading the team to victory. With all 3 just past their mid-20s the future looks bright for the Atlanta franchise.
Percentage of stats accrued by Atlanta's Big 3:
Pts - 61.5
Reb - 48.3
Ass. - 40.2
Stl - 46.5
Blk - 51.1
A statistical average of 49.52 divided by a mean age of 26.33 yields:
Big 3 Ratio: 1.88

The defending Western Conference Champions chose not to rest on their laurels and early this season made a deal to bring in explosive scorer Jerry Stackhouse to an already existing stout defensive squad. Just now finding their groove, Utah has won 9 of their last 10 including a 2 game sweep of Toronto. In addition to Stackhouse, the continued emergence of young Corey Maggette and the steady force of Raef LaFrentz down low have led to this group being mentioned in the elite circles. The great play of the youngster fresh out of Duke was just enough to perhaps surprisingly crown the Jazz trio with the title of Ultimate Big 3 for the 2003 season.
Percentage of stats accrued by Utah's Big 3:
Pts - 64.3
Reb - 45.0
Ass. - 38.3

Blk - 56.7

Big 3 Ratio: 1.97
